Jay-Z has announced plans to team up with Hollywood actor Will Smith for a remake of Annie, with daughter Willow Smith taking up the lead role.

The updated version of the 1982 film was confirmed by Smith's production company, Overbrook Entertainment after a dinner meeting with producer James Lassiter, reports the Boston Globe.

"The Overbrook Entertainment family and I have a unified vision," said Jay-Z. "We've already produced a Tony Award-winning play and we're developing a true superstar in Willow.

He added: "This venture into film development and production is a perfect next step with teams that are accomplished, creative, and innovative."

The rapper and Smith teamed up together last year to bring a Broadway musical about Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

Willow Smith also signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation label in 2010.
