Why is Jay-Z catching the subway?

Rapper shocks commuters by taking a Brooklyn-bound MTA train to his own gig

Jay-Z shocked New Yorkers this Saturday (October 6) when he caught the subway to a gig – watch a video of the resulting carnage above.

The rapper hopped on a Brooklyn-bound R train at the MTA station in Canal Street at around 6pm. He rode it all the way to Atlantic Avenue, where he got off to perform his his final show at the newly-erected Barclays Center, the final performance of his eight-night stint there.

Naturally, Jay-Z's fellow commuters were more than a little taken aback by the sight of the rapper on his first trip on the subway in more than 18 years. One Twitter user, @AConDEMAND, wrote: "So I'm in the train station minding my own business and Jay-Z walks by. Wtf."

Perhaps the rapper was taking a leaf out of Rihanna's book – she took a ride on the London Underground to get to her show at London's O2 arena last winter.

Later on in the evening, Jay-Z was joined by his wife Beyonce onstage – which is home to his partly-owned NBA team Brooklyn Nets. Beyonce performed her track 'Diva' before duetting with her husband for 'Crazy In Love' and 'Young Forever'.
