Courtney Love has said that she has given Jay-Z permission to use Nirvana lyrics on the rapper's forthcoming new album, 'Magna Carta Holy Grail'.

Kurt Cobain's widow has said Jay-Z took lyrics from the song 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and will be using them on his 12th studio LP. Speaking to the Huffington Post, Love said she thought her daughter might take issue with it: "I'm letting Jay-Z use lyrics - Frances [Bean Cobain] would freak [if she knew about it]. Jay-Z's huge and we're friends. I mean we're not besties or anything....".

'Magna Carta Holy Grail' was thought to be going platinum ahead of its proper release because of a deal made with Samsung. However a spokesperson for the Official UK Charts company told NME that music which is given away for free will not qualify as sales. "Legitimate purchases of Jay-Z's album will count, however, as usual," they added. One million copies of the album will be given away for free to Samsung Galaxy smartphone users 72 hours ahead of the record's official release on July 4. The Wall Street Journal reports that Samsung paid $5 (£3.18) for each copy of the album. Users will receive the music through the Magna Carta app, which they will get later this month.

Jay-Z broadcast the news of his new LP via an advert during Game 5 of the NBA Finals over the weekend. The three-minute promo for Samsung shows Jay-Z working in the studio with Rick Rubin, Pharrell Williams and Timbaland and talking about making music in the modern world.
