The performance, which took place in New York over the weekend, has prompted suggestions that Badgley will be singing in the forthcoming Jeff Buckley biopic in which he is set to star.

According to My Discman Broke, Badgley performed on the same bill in Brooklyn as Ryan Jarman from The Cribs, who was playing his first ever solo show.

Gossip Girl star Penn Badgley will portray Buckley in the forthcoming film Greetings From Tim Buckley. The film follows a young Buckley as he grapples with the overbearing legacy of his musician father Tim Buckley, leading up to and culminating with his classic 1991 performance of his father's songs, according to the Huffington Post.

Another film about Jeff Buckley is also in the works and will star American singer/actor Reeve Carney. Mystery White Boy is named after a posthumous Buckley live album released in 2000. The film is being helmed by renowned video director Jake Scott, while Ryan Jaffe – writer of 2008's The Rocker – has provided the script.

During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actress Olivia Thirlby suggested that Mystery White Boy will not follow the structure of a typical biopic.

Buckley died in 1997 at the age of 30 after drowning in Wolf River in Tennessee. He had released just one studio album, 1994's classic 'Grace', but his legend has continued to build with the release of several posthumous compilations and the enduring popularity of his cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah'.
