Jenny Lewis named LA 'Pioneer Woman'

Rilo Kiley singer honoured for putting Silver Lake on the musical map

Jenny Lewis named LA 'Pioneer Woman'

Jenny Lewis has been named Pioneer Woman' by the Los Angeles City Council.

The Rilo Kiley frontwoman is being honoured for her artistic contributions to LA's 13th City Council District, better known as Silver Lake - home to Lewis, Beck, Lou Barlow, Silversun Pickups and Club NME LA venue Spaceland.

Lewis dedicated her award to "all of my neighbours who, for all these years put up with the musical racket coming from my tiny apartment in Silver Lake".

Each year, Los Angeles honours one woman from each of its 15 council districts for "outstanding community service and accomplishments in the areas of education, equal rights, professional opportunities, arts, sciences and/or humanitarian contributions that continue to expand opportunities for generations to come".

Council president Eric Garcetti said of Lewis: "The qualities in her art that have led to her global success and critical celebration have also helped place the Silver Lake and Echo Park musical scenes on the leading edge of 21st-century song.

"Her position as one of America's finest singer/songwriters reflects not only her own prodigious talent but the wealth of artistry in the community she calls home," he added.
