Beatles hairdresser auctions off band memorabilia

A lock of John Lennon's hair brought in $48,000 today (December 12) at an auction of The Beatles memorabilia from the band's former hairdresser.

The sale price of Lennon's lock far exceeded the Gorringes auction house's expectations. They had estimated that it would sell for $4,000-$6,000.

The hair was inside a book that Lennon gave to hairdresser Betty Glasow, which was inscribed with the message "To Betty, Lots of Love and Hair, John Lennon xx."

It was sold to an unkown telephone bidder, reports the Associated Press.

Glasow also auctioned off a photo of George Harrison for $13,000, which he signed "George 'Dandruff' Harrison."

Glasow said she decided to sell the items because she wanted The Beatles fans to be able to enjoy them.
