Debbie Harry to headline John Lennon tribute concert in New York

Joan Osborne, Marshall Crenshaw and Ben E. King will also perform at 34th annual charity concert

Blondie‘s Debbie Harry has been confirmed as the headliner for this year’s John Lennon charity tribute concert in New York.

The Theatre Within staged concert is takes place for the 34th time on December 5 at Symphony Space in the US city. Joining Harry on the bill will be Kate Pierson of the B-52s, Joan Osborne, Marshall Crenshaw and Ben E. King. Proceeds from the night will go to Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Spirit Foundation.

Ono said in a statement: “I share Theatre Within’s belief that music and the performing arts have a special power to bring people together and inspire us to make a positive difference. It’s beautiful that the Tribute continues to have such a powerful impact in John’s memory.”

As well as performances, the first-ever John Lennon Real Love Award will also be given out on the night with photographer Bob Gruen, who photographed Lennon during his time in New York, set to be the inaugural recipient.

Meanwhile, a guitar once owned by Lennon and used to write The Beatles’ 1966 hit ‘Paperback Writer’ is expected to fetch around £600,000 at auction later this month. The Gretsch 6120 was given to Lennon’s cousin David Birch as a gift in 1967 and will now be auctioned off at Le Meridien Hotel, Piccadilly, London on November 23.
