Johnny Marr, former guitarist with The Smiths and The Cribs, is to feature on the whole of the soundtrack for forthcoming film, The Sweeney.

Marr's guitar playing features throughout the movie and on every piece of the soundtrack, aside from the original theme song from the TV show turned movie, reports Pitchfork.

Marr was asked by composer Lorne Balfe to contribute to the soundtrack. The pair also worked together on the original score for 2010's Inception.

The film sees Plan B – real name Ben Drew – act alongside Ray Winstone, Steven Mackintosh, Damian Lewis and Hayley Atwell. The Nick Love directed movie is set in the present day and will hit UK cinemas on September 21.

Scroll down to watch a trailer for the movie remake of the 1970's British cop show.

Johnny Marr received an honorary doctorate from the University of Salford earlier this summer. The guitarist has been a visiting professor in popular music at the university since 2007.
