Justin Bieber's private jet was yesterday (January 31) detained and searched under the suspicion of having marijuana on board.

The plane, which Bieber had chartered for tomorrow's Super Bowl (February 2), was held at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey as police reportedly smelled marijuana. Billboard writes that two different dogs indicated that there were drugs in a piece of luggage, however, nothing was found after a police search and Bieber and his entourage were free to go.

The incident follows a fraught month for Bieber, who was recently charged with assaulting a limo driver. The Canadian pop star turned himself into a Toronto police station over the alleged incident on January 29. Toronto police say Bieber was one of six people picked up outside a nightclub in the early hours of December 30. A statement claims that, while the group were driving to a hotel, "an altercation occurred between one of the passengers and the driver of the limousine".

The statement continues: "In the course of the altercation, a man struck the limousine driver on the back of the head several times. The driver stopped the limousine, exited the vehicle and called police. The man who struck him left the scene before police arrived." After turning himself in to police, the singer was charged with one count of assault and is scheduled to appear in court in Toronto on March 10. Bieber's lawyer has said the singer is innocent.

The charge comes after the pop star was arrested for a different incident in Florida and charged with drink driving after a police officer pulled him over on suspicion of racing a hired yellow Lamborghini on a public street. He was later released on bail of $2,500 (£1,500). In January, police in California also searched Bieber's home after he allegedly threw eggs at his neighbour's house.
