Justin Timberlake gets top honours at American Music Awards

'American Idol' alums win big

Justin Timberlake took home top honours at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles last night (November 18).

The pop star was named Favourite Male Pop-Rock Artist, and his album 'FutureSex/LoveSounds' took the prize for Favourite Soul/R&B Album.

Meanwhile Fergie earned the gong for Favourite Pop-Rock Female Artist, Jennifer Lopez took home Favourite Latin Artist, and Linkin Park was named Favourite Alternative Rock Band.

Alumni from the popular 'American Idol' television programme were the evening's top winners, with 'Idol' contestant Chris Daughtry's band Daughtry taking home three prizes, along with former 'Idol' champ Carrie Underwood, who took home three country music-related prizes.

The evening's performers included Duran Duran, who performed their new single 'Falling Down' as well as 1982 hit 'Hungry Like The Wolf'.

Celine Dion performed her new song 'Taking Chances' and Lenny Kravitz played 'I'll Be Waiting' on the piano.

Beyonce also performed a countrified version of her song 'Irreplaceable'.

The American Music Awards were created by Dick Clark in 1973 as an alternative to the Grammy Awards, to honour musical achievement in several genres.

This year's winners were voted on by the public for the first time.
