UK independent labels lead Brit nominations
Major labels are left behind
Led by Kaiser Chiefs, who scooped five nominations in this year’s Brit Awards, UK independent label signed acts have dominated the 2006 shortlist.
The UK independent sector has gained 18 nominations for the event, more than any of the four major labels – Warners, EMI, Universal and Sony BMG.
The Brit Awards are set to held on February 15 at London’s Earls Court and the smaller label artists feature in 13 of the 15 categories.
Other UK independent-signed nominees include Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire, Paul Weller and Antony & The Johnsons.
As previously reported on NME.COM, Kaiser Chiefs, James Blunt and Coldplay are amongst the main nominations the awards ceremony.
The event will also see live appearances from Coldplay, Kaiser Chiefs, , Kanye West, Kelly Clarkson and KT Tunstall.
Hosted by Chris Evans, the awards have recognised Kaiser Chiefs who are nominated in five categories - the most of any band and only equalled this year by James Blunt. Kaiser Chiefs are nominated in the British Group, MasterCard Album, Breakthrough Act, Live Act and Rock Act categories.
Last year Franz Ferdinand were nominated for five awards, but this year have been nominated in three - Best Band, Best Live Act and Best Rock Act.
