Kaiser Chiefs went down a storm on a snowy winter’s night at the Doncaster Dome last night (February 9), performing a special show for Radio 1.

Introduced onstage by the station's Zane Lowe, Ricky Wilson and co launched into a raucous set mixing established crowd-pleasers from debut album ‘Employment’ alongside new material from forthcoming follow-up album ‘Yours Truly, Angry Mob’.

A sell-out crowd of 3,000-plus were treated to a lively opener in current single ‘Ruby’, before the band raised the roof with ‘Everyday I Love You Less And Less’ and ‘Born To Be A Dancer’.

Next came new song ‘Heat Dies Down’, a typically rousing stomper that saw Wilson run around the stage in a typically energetic fashion.

“This is a song about where me and Peanut [keyboards] went to school,” said Wilson introducing new track ‘Highroyds’.

Before ‘The Modern Way’, the singer declared: “It feels good to be back. Have you missed us? It’s been pretty boring [without us], hasn’t it?”

Wilson then asked drummer Nick Hodgson for a special message for the crowd - which was simply “keep cool” - before introducing ‘Thank You Very Much’ – another new song, built around a massive riff and electro-pop-keyboards.

More new material followed with ‘My Kind Of Guy’ and ‘Everything Is Average Nowadays’.

Not surprisingly the biggest reaction of the night was for ‘I Predict A Riot’, which saw the entire audience singing along and Wilson crowd-surfing above them.

Among the rapt audience was Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles, who received a mostly favourable reception - plus a few chants of “you fat bastard” - as he acknowledged the crowd towards the end.

Kaiser Chiefs played:

‘Ruby’
‘Everyday I Love You Less And Less’
‘Born To Be A Dancer’
‘Heat Dies Down’
‘Highroyds’
‘Modern Way’
‘Thank You Very Much’
‘My Kind Of Guy’
‘Everything Is Average Nowadays’
‘I Predict A Riot’
‘The Angry Mob’
‘Retirement’
‘Na Na Na Na Naa’
‘Oh My God’

Earlier the band had been supported by The Twang, who gave the South Yorkshire crowd a chance to see if they lived up to their reputation as one of 2007’s best new bands.

During a 30-minute set including ‘Either Way’ and forthcoming single ‘Wide Awake’, singer Phil Etheridge joked with the crowd: “Let’s have a big ‘fuck off to Radio 1!’," before adding: "Only kidding! I love ya – Zane, keep playing our tunes!”

The gig will be broadcast on Zane Lowe's show on Radio 1 on Monday (February 12) from 7pm, while highlights can also be viewed on interactive BBC TV.

Meanwhile the band are set to head out on a a north American tour in April – and NME is going along for the ride.
