Kaiser Chiefs played an intimate show at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London on the final night of this year’s Shockwaves NME Awards Shows (March 2).

The band, who performed at the previous night's ceremony, rounded off three weeks of live music with a set that showcased their new album ’Yours Truly, Angry Mob’ - which was only released on Monday (February 26).

Kicking off a three night run at the venue (they play March 3 and 4 also), the band performed a selection of new songs and favourites from debut album ’Employment’.

“We are the world famous Kaiser Chiefs,” joked frontman Ricky Wilson as the band took the stage. “Back in London for three nights only!”

The jovial tone set the mood for the gig which witnessed an enthusiastic mosh pit throughout the show.

However the singer was not wrong about his band's international appeal, sending up the band’s current success by informing the crowd of their European endeavours.

“We’ve just been told we have a Number One record in Holland,” Wilson told the audience, before introducing current single ’Ruby’. “Well from now until Sunday we have one in the UK too!”

The singer then joked about the venue’s previous life as a BBC studio and the home to the 1980s staple 'Wogan'.

“This is where the Wogan show used to be done,” Wilson explained. “I watched Status Quo [play the chat show] from the top balcony once! This song, ’Heat Dies Down’, is for the Quo!”

With the whole band rallying to perform an energetic set, the group thrilled the sold out crowd ensuring new tracks like next single ’Learnt My Lesson Well’ and ’Thank You Very Much’ were received as ecstatically as the likes of ’I Predict A Riot’.

Such was the fond response to the new material, that Wilson even felt able sent up the supposedly cold reputation of London crowds as he introduced ’Highroyds’.

“People of London we’re from the North,” he declared, with his tongue firmly in his cheek. “We are simple folk and we know little of your London ways. We’re sorry if it’s not London enough for you, but we’re going to give you a taste of our home town now. This song is about a mental hospital near where we all grew up.”

Kaiser Chiefs played:

’Saturday Night’
‘Every Day I Love You Less And Less’
‘Ruby’
‘Heat Dies Down’
‘Thank You Very Much’
‘Born To Be A Dancer’
‘Modern Way’
‘Highroyds’
‘Learnt My Lesson Well’
‘I Predict A Riot’
‘The Angry Mob’
‘Retirement’
‘Na Na Na Na Naa’
‘Oh My God’

Earlier support had come from Ripchord and The Twang, with the latter using the slot to showcase their forthcoming album.

Explaining the Birmingham band’s debut it is still a work in progress, frontman Phil Etheridge told the crowd, “These are proper new, I know it’s all new to you lot, but really we’ve just been working on this stuff."
