Ricky Wilson: 'Everyone knows 'Ruby' is the best single'

Kaiser Chiefs slate Brits after single is dropped from award

Ricky Wilson has explained his frustration that Kaiser Chiefs are not in the shortlist for British Single Of The Year at the Brit Awards.

The band were originally in the long-list for the award with their 2007 Number One 'Ruby', but were cut as the category was whittled down for the public vote ahead of tomorrow's (February 20) ceremony.

The singer told BBC 6Music: “Everyone knows 'Ruby' is the best single, if you are gonna whittle them down to five, you'd think 'Ruby' would be in there wouldn't you?”

The five tracks that were chosen are by Hoosiers, Mika, Take That, Leona Lewis and Mark Ronson.

The frontman explained: “They've all got their merits, but I am just a bit annoyed.”

Kaiser Chiefs are still up for Best British Live Act and Best British Group, and are expected to play the ceremony at London's Earls Court in collaboration with Paul McCartney, who is picking up the 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award.

The tracks nominated for British Single Of The Year are:

The Hoosiers – 'Worried About Ray'
Leona Lewis – 'Bleeding Love'
Mark Ronson – 'Valerie' (featuring Amy Winehouse)
Mika – 'Grace Kelly'
Take That – 'Shine'

Kaiser Chiefs, meanwhile, are playing the Shockwaves NME Awards Big Gig next week (February 28) at the O2 Arena in London. For details of the show and ticket information go to NME.COM/biggig.

I understand his reaction... and I agree with him.
Grace Kelly, Shine and Valerie have also deserved it but I don't like the stupid Bleeding love. it's only an opinion (;

Ruby is a good single, but to be honest, it's like picking the best of a bad bunch. My money is on 'Valerie' 'cuz it has the Winehouse and Ronson association, though non of them are particularly great.

I understand and agree as well. Without dragging my taste into it, Ruby deserved to be a part of the shortlist.

Even though it might not be bigger than the others, it's definetely equally the size, and bigger than one or two of them...

Blimey, all them nominated songs are awful, but so is Ruby.

Ricky seems to be missing a key point here: 'Ruby' is a worthless stain on pop that even the likes of the Hoosiers needn't break into a sweat to better.

Its proper turd.

Ruby is a tune, and the other songs are not as good as Ruby but i think it's pretty big-headed of him to come out with a statement like that (In my Opinion).

i think its fair enough for him to feel annoyed - Ruby was a huge hit this year and surely it deserves to be in the short list!

If Kaiser Chiefs win an award tomorrow night The Brits can kiss goodbye to any slight credibility they might have.
