Kaiser Chiefs made a triumphant return to Leeds Festival today (August 24).

The Leeds band took to the Main Stage before headliners The Black Keys and the Foo Fighters, performing their Olympics Closing Ceremony cover of The Who's 'Pinball Wizard'.

Speaking to NME before their set, keyboard player Nick 'Peanut' Baines said: "Leeds is always a very different experience for us – when you’re in a different country you can go around and watch a few bands, but this is always just sorting out guestlist and seeing people."

Bassist Simon Rix added: "We've all got all our friends and family down here. This is the only festival I have to look after my mum."

"We all love Leeds," drummer Nick Hodgson sang during the show to the crowd, adding, "Don't worry, we're going to sing that at Reading too.". Meanwhile, singer Ricky Wilson climbed onto the scaffolding, before jumping down and throwing his microphone into the crowd for 'I Predict A Riot'.

They also performed hit singles 'Every Day I Love You Less And Less', 'Ruby' and 'Oh My God'.

Laura Hill, 17, from Rotherham said: "They were brilliant. Ricky's so good on stage. He's got such a great stage presence. It really gets everyone going. My favourite song was definitely 'Ruby'. Everyone knows that track."

Martin Hymas, 19, from Nottingham was also upbeat about their performance. He added: "They played all the classics – and they've got some great classics. They kept the crowd going. It was absolutely awesome."

Earlier in the day, Pulled Apart By Horses became the first ever Leeds band to open the festival. They kicked off by urging the front of the crowd to form two circle pits whilst doing the conga. "It's a fucking pleasure being here. I can't lie to you, this is fucking weird," frontman Tom Hudson told the crowd as guitarist James Brown handed out cans of lager to the first few rows of fans.

Band of Skulls, Eagles of Death Metal, The Gaslight Anthem, and Bullet For My Valentine also played the Main Stage.

Meanwhile, Tribes showcased two new songs on the Radio 1/NME stage in their mid-afternoon slot, 'Get Some Healing' and 'Dancehall'. Finishing with 'We Were Children', singer Johnny Lloyd leapt over the barriers into the audience for a climatic singalong.
