Kaiser Chiefs and Bill Nighy have teamed up on a modern day war poem, which features on the Leeds band's forthcoming new album, the Independent reports.

Inspired by the First World War centenary, the group's frontman and The Voice coach Ricky Wilson wrote The Occupation. The poem references the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Actor Bill Nighy came to read the poem and requested he be allowed to record the narration of the verses. The recorded version will appear as a stand-alone spoken word track on Kaiser Chiefs' 'Education, Education, Education & War' LP, which is released later this month.

Speaking about the poem, Nighy said: "I was intrigued by the concept and I admired the poem. And I dig those crazy rhythms."

Wilson, meanwhile, discussed the inspiration behind the track: "When I was writing the lyrics for the record, the whole World War One centenary thing was flying around. So if you're writing honestly, it’s going to leak in there. I wrote the poem as an exercise originally. The original story was an imaginary assault by a superpower – not necessarily the USA, trying to take over Hell. They are invading Hell, wiping out Hell. Then going 'now what do we do, where do we go next?'"
