Barack Obama has labelled Kanye West a "jackass" for invading the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards during Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for winning the Best Female Video prize on Sunday (September 13).

West took the microphone from Swift and suggested that Beyoncé Knowles should have won the award, and has since apologised for his behaviour.

Speaking before a press conference, the US President condemned West's actions. "I thought that was really inappropriate," he said on an audio stream leaked by ABC News. "She was getting an award, why are you butting in? The young lady seems like a perfectly nice person, she's getting her award, what's he doing up there? He's a jackass."

Meanwhile, Swift told ABC News Radio that the rapper had phoned her to personally say sorry. "He was very sincere in his apology and I accepted that apology," she said.
