Kanye West has thanked Def Jam Record co-founder Russell Simmons after he defended the 'Yeezus' rapper and labelled him a "genius"

Hip-hop mogul Simmons wrote an op-ed piece for Global Grind titled 'The Genius That Is Kanye West' in which he claims that West is selfless in his quest for change in the music and fashion industries. Arguing that West wants change to happen for the benefit of everyone, Simmons uses personal anecdotes from his time spent with the rapper to illustrate his point.

"I recently sat down with Ye in New York and got the chance to hear about his hopes and ambitions, his frustrations and contradictions, his happiness and his anger," writes Simmons. "But through it all, what I felt from Kanye was an artist who desperately wants to leave his imprint in the history books. What’s often times misunderstood about Kanye is that people believe he wants all of this for himself, in fact, quite the opposite, he wants all of this for the rest of us."

The piece continues: "He wants to destroy the glass ceiling with 808s and crack music… so one day we have the power to see all of the lights. It is his genius, his tenacity, his creativity, his relentlessness and his madness, that will allow us all to one day have the ability to touch the sky."

Following the publication of Simmons' article, West tweeted his thanks.

Earlier this week West claimed that he has spent $13m (£8m) trying to get into the fashion industry. The huge sum was revealed during a new interview on US radio and TV presenter Sway Calloway in which he lost his temper with the host and rapped over an instrumental of Nine Inch Nails' 'Closer'.

Speaking in a different radio interview earlier this week, West confirmed that he has signed a deal with sports manufacturer Adidas after his relationship with Nike broke when they refused to let him take royalties on his products. West claimed his new deal will see him become "bigger than Walmart".

It was reported that West is planning to release his next solo album in Summer 2014.
