Karen O says Yeah Yeah Yeahs ‘are on a bit of a hiatus’

Singer says group have no plans to work on new album and are 'waiting to get the urge'

Karen O has revealed that Yeah Yeah Yeahs currently have no plans of working on new material and are “on a bit of a hiatus”.

Speaking in the new issue of NME, which is on newsstands now and available digitally, the ‘Maps’ singer explained that the group are waiting to feel inspired before starting anything anew together. “We’re on a bit of hiatus at the moment, so nothing yet. We have to wait to get the urge, get that itch. The time needs to be right and we’re OK waiting for that, I think,” she said, adding that when the band do get back together “it’ll be like muscle memory, this unspoken thing between the three of us where it all just… locks in.”

O clarified that poor reviews of Yeah Yeah Yeah’s last album, 2013’s ‘Mosquito’, won’t deter them from future projects. “It’s a pretty dangerous hole to fall down, reading your own reviews, so it’s not something I personally do. All you can do is try to make albums you can stand by and be proud of, that are a snapshot of where you were at the time. It won’t stop us, nothing like that.”

When questioned on whether her new solo album ‘Crush Songs’ was written in response to rifts among the band during the recording of second album ‘Show Your Bones’, O insisted that that was never her intention. “It was just me trying to express all the fucked-up shit I felt,” she said. “‘Show Your Bones’ was a really hard record to make; a dark, tense time. The majority of the pain, craziness and suffering you feel making a record is in the studio, piecing it together. You do interviews right after coming out of that environment and end up saying things like that.”

O also spoke about her nervousness when it came to releasing solo material for the first time and why it took seven years for ‘Crush Songs’ to go from being written to being made public. “Even when the whole thing was a done deal, like two weeks before the record came out, I was having second thoughts, like, ‘No! What am I doing?! Is it too late to put the brakes on?!’ It’s a big thing to bare yourself to the world on your own […] It just took a while to commit to the idea of sharing something so personal,” she said.

‘Crush Songs’ was released in September on Julian Casablancas’ Cult Records label. O called the Strokes frontman “a fucking amazing guy” and said the pair always “admired each other from afar”.
