MICK JONES and JOHN PEEL were honoured alongside the cream of unsigned UK talent at the DIESEL U-MUSIC AWARDS last night (July 7).

Now in its fourth year, the ceremony was the climax of the widest search for new talent in the UK. The winners gathered at London's Fabric nightclub.

Alongside the winners in various genre categories, the former Clash guitarist and current Libertines producer was given the Lifetime Achievement honour. Meanwhile, Radio 1's Peel was rewarded for his Outstanding Contribution to Underground Music. The award was presented by NME editor Conor McNicholas.

Peel told NME.COM: "Any award, if you win it, is a very valuable and significant thing. If you don't it's a load of bollocks. So I was pleased to get it, I just hope I can get it home without breaking it, and that's about it really.

"This is quite specific and it's nicer to win for that that. It's not the sort of thing you get for just having survived, it's more specific than that, so I'm pleased to get it."

James Brown was given an International Lifetime Achievement Award, which he accepted on a pre-recorded video. Brown was presented with the award by Soul II Soul lynchpin Jazzie B.

This year, the Best Rock category was judged by NME, and the winning band were Colchester five-piece Absent Kid. They played live later that night.

The winners were:

Best Dance: DJ Sushi
Best Electronic: The Infadels
Best Electronic Leftfield: I Am The Mighty Jungulator
Best VJ: Coresnfx
Urban 1: Aphletik
Urban 2: Obidient Bone
Best Rock: Absent Kid
Lifetime Achievement: Mick Jones
Outstanding Contribution to Underground Music: John Peel
International Lifetime Achievement: James Brown

The Infadels were then given a special award, named Best Live Act out of the winners. The award made a triple celebration for the outfit, who earlier that day signed a record deal with Wall Of Sound.

The ceremony was hosted by Edith Bowman and will be broadcast on Channel 4 next Wednesday (July 20). Live sets came from Kasabian and Goldie Lookin' Chain. Also in attendance were Goldie, Keith Flint and Bez.
