London Astoria cancels its last-ever party

Manumission night off, though PUSH organised farewell to go ahead

One of London's most iconic venues, the Astoria, has been forced to cancel its final party, which was to be hosted by Ibiza's Manumission club.

The January 15 was set to feature several big-name acts who wanted to say farewell to the venue, but Transport For London, who are demolishing the venue to make way for the Crossrail, reportedly served 28 days notice to vacate the property just before the holidays, leaving organisers short of time to arrange the party.

“It is ridiculous that such an important venue is being demolished for ‘economic progress’," the club's hosts said in a statement.

"It can never be replaced. We wanted to give The Astoria the send off it deserves, we feel saddened and disappointed by the decision made to pull what could have been an amazing event, especially in these troubled times.”

They also sent their thanks to several artists who were planning to be involved in the event or showed their support for the venue, including Kasabian, Foo Fighters, Kaiser Chiefs, Babyshambles, Primal Scream, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly and Damon Albarn.

Despite the closure of the Astoria, Manumission is set to start a world tour of clubs, including a "special appearance" in London later this year.

The closing night party at the Astoria 2 hall downstairs been hosted by indie club PUSH will go ahead as planned on January 15.

Proper rubs. I had tickets for this, and looking at who may have played I feel gutted. TFL are arses. It's unbelievable one of the best venues ever isn't getting a proper farewell. Sit on it Boris.

I bet manumission are gutted cos so many people who go to the astoria on a regular basis would love to go to manumission as the last night rather than see some great live acts

Makes the Demolition Ball even more special with a proper indie send off like it should be!
