Kasabian: 'I don't know if it's good or bad to be Mercury favourites' Kasabian Tickets

Serge Pizzorno says the band's nomination came as a shock to him

Kasabian's Sergio Pizzorno has said he can't decide if it's good or bad to have been named the current favourite, along with Florence And The Machine, to win the Barclaycard Mercury Prize 2009.

Reacting to news that the band have been given odds of 5/1 to pick up the prize this September, Pizzorno told NME.COM he hadn’t even contemplated being nominated before this morning (July 21).

"I've never really thought about it before, and then someone rang us up and goes "You're nominated," and it's like "Yeah?! Nice one!"," he said.

"I think we're joint favourites aren’t we? I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing though… To be honest, if we can play there, at the ceremony, that would be nice."

Pizzorno also paid tribute to fellow nominees The Horrors, as well as other "NME-type" bands.

"That Horrors album's really good isn’t it?" he exclaimed. "I like the single they released, it's great. I'm glad they're in it [the nominations list]. The NME-type bands are sort of saving it a bit, do you know what I mean?!"

To listen to full interviews with acts nominated for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize 2009, tune into Chris Martin's show on NME Radio this evening, from 7pm to 11pm (BST).

Last year's Barclaycard Mercury Prize was won by Elbow.

After seeing that photo the only thing I have to say is: "babada babada baba da da, bring it down now, babada babada baba da dah, mash it up now, we are looking backwards, we are running backwards, running through time into the past, taking retro to its natural conclusion" and for that reason alone, I'm out.

I have a lot of respect for Kasabian, they are a "band's band " as well as being great with their fans. Their new material is probably the best they have produced so far.....worthy winners?...Even if they dont win it they are already doing it for the right reasons, an inspiration to new bands coming up...it IS possible to have integrity in the music biz.

Agree with kingtutt, Kasabian are shite. Their music is shallow and they have no enduring quality. In 10 years time no one will listen to them, as opposed to truly great bands like The Stone Roses.

I'm with hness on this one, I don't think Kasabian are the best band around at the moment, but at least they're trying to be a bit different and not just putting out the same 3 chord meat and potatoes over and over again. They put on a very good live show too and they look like rock stars. It's a shame they're lumped in with the Lad rock crowd (Oasis, Enemy, Stereophonics etc) because there's very little similarity between them and any of those bands. As for the Mercury Prize, has anyone actually given a shit about it since M People won it in the 90s?
