Kasabian have won the Best Album (sponsored by HMV) award at the Shockwaves NME Awards tonight (February 24) for 'West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum'.

The Leicester band beat off competition from nominees Arctic Monkeys (for 'Humbug'), Muse (for 'The Resistance'), The Cribs (for 'Ignore The Ignorant') and The Horrors (for 'Primary Colours').

The award was presented at the O2 Academy Brixton in London by guest presenters Courtney Love and The Mighty Boosh's Noel Fielding.

Kasabian frontman Tom Meighan marched over the bridge holding aloft a fake decapitated head that Noel Fielding had been swinging around during their earlier performance, before he hugged the comedy star.

"Hello, hello, what a beautiful award. Thanks to the NME," Meighan said, before adding: "Fair play, [Paul] Weller looks amazing and The Specials too. Suck it baby, suck it good."

Fielding added: "I just want to say, what an album."

Courtney Love had the last word, though, when she took a pop at Ke$ha.

"I just want to say Ke$ha sucks," she spat.
