Tom Meighan tells NME the band will record new material late next year

Kasabian have said that their next studio album will be "really dark and leftfield".

The Leicester rockers, who headlined this weekend's T In The Park told NME that although the follow-up to 2011's 'Velociraptor!' is a long way away from being released, mainman Serge Pizzorno has "loads of songs" already written.

Speaking in a video which you can see at the top of the page, singer Tom Meighan said: "Serge is always writing music, whether he's on the road, at home, or in his hotel room. I imagine he's got a load of songs that I've not heard yet. He's played me some. I can't confirm how many he's got. We'll probably record when we have a break and get back in the studio late next year."

When asked how their new album would move on from 'Velociraptor!', he said: "We've never really made a pop album before, not one with bridges and choruses and three-minute songs. With our other albums, we'd do interludes, psychedelic breakdowns, 12 minute endings and with 'Velociraptor!', we wanted to do a pop album. With our next one, we're going to go leftfield, really dark and leftfield."

Meighan also responded to Pizzorno's recent claims that people still think of the band as "boozy knob head lad-rock dicks". "When we were younger we used to say these outrageous quotes and I think people took it a little too seriously because we were winding the media up and trying to manipulate people," he said, adding: "

Journalists hated us and I'm not surprised. Our attitude was incredible. We thought we were the best god damn band in the fucking world and we still believe that. I'm sorry if I really annoyed anybody back then. But hey, we've grown up now, we've got families.

Meanwhile, Kasabian released a new live DVD and album last month. The package, which is titled 'Live!: Live At The O2' was filmed during the band's show at London's 20,000 capacity O2 Arena on December 15 last year. It comes with a documentary about the band's arena tour 'I Hear Voices'.

Kasabian will headline Reading And Leeds Festivals later this summer.
