Kate Nash has said she would be a "fucked-up person" if she didn't write songs.

Speaking to the Independent, Nash - who released her grunge-influenced track 'Underestimate The Girl' in June last year - said that if it wasn't for her singing career she would be a "very negative person".

She said: "I sing because I have to get things out. I need to puke them up, to purge. If I didn't, all my anger would go into very negative areas. If I didn't write songs, I'd be a very fucked-up person, no question."

Nash also said she had always been attracted to rock stars such as Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and Hole's Courtney Love, but claimed she wasn't "necessarily nihilistic" herself. "I really don't want to destroy myself in this process. I only seek destruction through music," she went on to add. "It's cathartic for me, and I love what I do. I'm not trying to be cool. I don't give a shit about any of that. The whole point of being a musician is to be there for the outsider, and to empower young women."

Nash is set to release her third studio album, 'Girl Talk', on March 4, with the single '3am' set to come out on February 18. The singer will also play a 21-date tour of the UK to support the release of the LP, with the run of shows starting at Norwich Arts Centre on April 5 and finishing at London's 100 Club on May 1. The tour is in addition to two previously announced shows at Reading Sub 89 on February 12 and an NME Awards Show at London Sebright Arms on February 13.
