Katy Perry to play Freddie Mercury's girlfriend in new film?

Katy Perry is apparently keen to play the girlfriend of Queen's Freddie Mercury in a new film about the late frontman's life.

The forthcoming movie – which will see Sacha Baron Cohen taking on the role of Mercury – is being produced by Graham King (The Departed), and Cohen is already working with Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor on the film, reports The Mirror. Stephen Frears is tipped to direct.

A source has said that Perry is interested in the role of Mercury's girlfriend, Mary Austin, commenting: "Katy would love to be in the film as she is such a huge fan. She would want to play Mary Austin ideally. Katy has a similar look to Mary and would be a brilliant foil to Sacha."

Austin and Mercury were an item for six years in the 1970s and she remained one of his closest confidants. Mercury often described Austin as the love of his life and she was one of the first people he told when he was diagnosed as being HIV Positive. Mercury died as a result of AIDS-related pneumonia in 1991.

Katy Perry recently warned fans that her next album will be "real fucking dark". The singer, who is currently working on her third studio effort, claims her next LP will take a turn for the bleak following her divorce from comedian Russell Brand.
