Katy Perry has won her chart battle with Lady Gaga in the States this week with her single 'Roar' outselling Gaga's 'Applause' by two copies to one.

Both artists released the lead singles from their respective new albums this week (August 12), with Gaga's 'Applause' being rush-released on August 13 following the track leaking online. Billboard reports that since their release, Katy Perry's 'Roar' has sold 450,000 copies to the 225,000 singles Lady Gaga has shifted. Katy Perry has had the benefit of her single being on sale for a full week, as opposed to the four days Gaga's song has currently been available.

The singles are both taken from new album's by two of the biggest pop stars in the world. 'Roar' is the first track from Perry's 'Prism', due for release in October while 'Applause' comes from Lady Gaga's new album 'ARTPOP', due in stores from November.

The high sales figures mark the first time since October 2012 that two songs have sold over 200,000 copies in a week. The last time it happened was when One Direction's 'Live While We're Young' sold 341,000 copies, closely followed by Taylor Swift's 'Red' and Adele's 'Skyfall'.

Meanwhile, producer Dillon Francis has accused Katy Perry of copying him on the video for 'Roar'. Writing on Twitter, Francis said that the singer's new video was a "rip off" of the ideas used in the promo for his track 'Messages'. Both videos show the lyrics to their respective songs being unveiled via text message, although Perry's clip also shows her playing with her cat and sitting on the lavatory.
