Katy Perry has been criticised by Peta over the use of animals in her video for new single 'Roar'.

The animal rights organisation claims that the exotic animals used in the promo were likely to have been subjected to abuse, as the company responsible for supplying them has an allegedly questionable track record.

Merrilee Burke, a spokeswoman for Peta, told The Daily Star: "Animals used for entertainment endure horrific cruelty and suffer from extreme confinement and violent training methods. They often become stressed and anxious when hauled around and forced into unfamiliar or frightening situations.

She added: "The Serengeti Ranch, the animal exhibitor that we believe supplied the animals for the 'Roar' video, has been inspected by the US Department of Agriculture 22 times since 2001."

Katy Perry's 'Roar' is currently Number One in the Official UK Singles Chart. The track, which is the first to be taken from Perry's forthcoming new album 'Prism', has also become her fastest-selling UK single of her career after it sold 179,500 copies in its first week on sale. 'Roar' is also the third fastest-selling single in the UK this year, behind Avicii's 'Wake Me Up' and Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines'.
