The rapper paid a visit to Mount Pleasant High School in Providence, Rhode Island as a reward for the school winning the Get Schooled National Attendance Challenge. Delivering a speech to the students, Lamar said: "Without education you don't have anything. My teachers were great positive influences in my life."

"My middle English teacher was probably the reason I became a rapper," he added. "He used to encourage me to write poetry and challenge me, which helped me improve my vocabulary and made me enjoy writing."

Lamar, who released his debut LP ' Good Kid, mAAd City' towards the end of 2012, is set to tour the UK this July and will play shows in Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds on the stretch, before appearance at London's Wireless festival on July 13, along with Emeli Sande, Rita Ora, Kendrick Lamar, Miguel, DJ Fresh and Calvin Harris.

He will play:

O2 Academy Birmingham (July 8)
O2 Manchester Apollo (9)
O2 Academy Leeds (10)

Kendrick Lamar recently topped a poll of the Hottest MCs in the world, finishing above 2 Chainz, Kanye West and Rick Ross. The MTV list rewarded Lamar based on a combination of rhyme skill, flow, buzz, commercial success, business ventures, web presence, and cultural influence. Speaking about the accolade, he said: "It’s very important for hip-hop. I love that they have debates like that. We need that. It’s still competitive and I’m trying to compete with everybody to be the best."
