Kendrick Lamar has told a US radio station he was surprised by the response to his belligerent cameo in Big Sean's 'Control', and says he might 'dumb down' his lyrics after the controversy it caused.

The Compton, LA, rapper caused a furore when 'Control (HOF)' premiered on August 12. After proclaiming himself king of New York, and himself, Jay Z, Nas, Eminem and Andre 3000 as the greatest MCs of all time, Lamar then goes on to pledge to "murder" his current competitors in the verse.

He raps: "I'm usually homeboys with the same niggas I'm rhyming with/ But this is hip-hop and them niggas should know what time it is/And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big KRIT, Wale, Pusha-T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Drake, Big Sean, Jay Electron', Tyler, Mac Miller/I got love for you all but I'm trying to murder you niggas".

Speaking to LA radio station Power 106 yesterday, Lamar claimed he was unaware how much of a storm his words would kick up. "I didn’t know there would be so much speculation, I just want to rap," he said. "I think it’s a case of maybe I should dumb down my lyrics just a little bit."

Lamar added: "The irony of that line is that the people who actually understood it and got it were the actual kings of New York, you know, me sitting down with them this past week, and them understanding, it’s not actually about being the king of whatever coast, it’s about leaving a mark as great as Biggie, as great as Pac."

It is reported by Billboard that Lamar attended Diddy and Jay Z's MTV VMA after-party at New York's Dream Hotel on Sunday (August 25), where it was rumoured that Diddy and Cole were involved in a fracas over the 'Control' verse. Diddy took to Twitter to say: "We are friends. We just yell in public sometimes LOL #Fam."
