British bands and US legends rock Benicassim

Klaxons and The Horrors battled for supremacy with some of US rock’s biggest stars at the first full day of Benicassim tonight (July 20).

Both London bands brought some British indie style to a line-up heavy in classic rock veterans and cutting edge dance talent.

Klaxons played to one of the busiest tents of the weekend, after having to move their show back by almost four hours – and into a smaller stage – after ongoing bad weather in London severely delayed their journey.

But the new rave threesome made the night their own, thundering through their hits and dedicating 'Golden Skans' to "everybody who made it to the tent."

Earlier on, Danish dance outfit Who Made Who played to the audience of their lives on the main stage, even though most of them turned up expecting to see Klaxons.

But the festival's main stage belonged to heroes of the US. Dinosaur Jr. returned to the festival after two years to showcase tracks from new album 'Beyond' like 'Follow Me' alongside classics like 'Freak Scene'.

Joining them on the main stage were new wave legends Devo and alt.country pioneers Wilco. And over on the Vodafone Fib Club stage, current college rock stars played to one of the weekend’s biggest crowds.

But far from being a line-up tailored to mature tastes, Benicassim's famed dance tents were in full swing, with Vitalic, Digitalism and leading the charge.

Benicassim's dance stages will now run on into the night, and the festival resumes tomorrow, with Arctic Monkeys the main attraction.
