Mercury Prize winners join efforts to send 'God Save The Queen' to Number One

Klaxons have declared the Sex Pistols “the most important band that existed” and are backing efforts to get the band’s anthem ’God Save The Queen’ to the top of the charts.

NME.COM is backing a campaign to send the record back to Number One next week after it was cheated out of the top spot 30 years ago.

’God Save The Queen’ was denied its rightful place at Number One because the authorities feared the punk anthem would spoil the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977.

We want to right that wrong and are encouraging everyone to buy the record this week (from October 8) as the track is reissued on vinyl.

Either head down to the record shop now or you can buy it from 7digital.com or other downloaders like iTunes.

Speaking about the punks, Jamie Reynolds from this year’s Nationwide Mercury Prize winners, declared he would do all he could to get ’God Save The Queen’ back into the charts.

“The Sex Pistols are probably the most important band that existed so I’m happy to support NME’s campaign in any way I can. I will certainly be buying several copies,” he declared.

He added: “It wasn’t even the music necessarily, it was the thought that went into the Sex Pistols that was important. But buying the single will at least be the first step to realising that for anyone who doesn’t know the band’s history or legacy.”

Join the campaign to send Sex Pistols’God Save The Queen’ to Number One. Let us know what you think of the track by sending your thoughts to news@nme.com with Pistols as the subject and we’ll print the best.

I'm not denying that 'God Save The Queen' isn't a good song or that Sex Pistols weren't a decent band, but to say they were amoung the top 20 most important bands would be laughable. They were hardly original, after all if Malcom McClaren hadn't ripped off Richard Hell's sound and look they wouldn't have existed.

if we didnt have sex pistols first gig then there wouldnt be the clash and joy division. fact. so to say they're not in important, forgetting whether they ripped anybody off, is stupid.
