KT Tunstall has disowned her stepfather after finding out he is standing as a candidate for the British National Party in the forthcoming general election.
Tunstall's stepfather David Orr has been a member of the far right party for a decade, and is standing in the town of Livingston, West Lothian. He married Tunstall's mother Carol Ann in 1989.
Carol Ann Orr, who is half Chinese and was born in Hong Kong, is understood to have nominated her husband as a BNP candidate, reports The Herald. She gave up Tunstall for adoption a few days after she was born, though the two were reunited in 2006.
Speaking of his relationship with Tunstall, Orr said: "Katie [KT] doesn't agree with our policies. She's one of the greenies, the yoghurt knitters." Orr added: "We see Katie when she's up on tour. When she found out that I was standing for the British National Party, it was a quick stand back."
Speaking about Tunstall's mother, he explained: "She has met Nick Griffin. She met him up in Perth about a year-and-a-half ago."
Tunstall's said that she is no longer in contact with Orr. "She abhors the BNP and all they stand for," he spokesperson said. "She now has no contact with David Orr."
