Kylie Minogue is to be given an honorary degree from Anglia Ruskin University to acknowledge her work raising awareness about breast cancer after battling it herself.

The singer was diagnosed with the disease in 2005, but was given the all-clear in 2006 after undergoing surgery and a course of chemotherapy.

At the time she said:

Had I not discovered that until a little later, the story might be very different. So overall I feel that I was saved, I really was… Young people tend to think it doesn’t happen to them and it’s not true. I’m not here to scare people at all. It just happens, so be aware.

The Australian singer will collect her Doctorate in Health Sciences from the university's campus in Chelmsford, Essex.

The University has recently also given degrees to novelist Jilly Cooper, who was given a Doctorate of Letters on Tuesday (October 4), and accessories designer Anya Hindmarsh who will become a Doctor of Arts tomorrow (October 6).
