Lady Gaga: ‘I suffer with post-traumatic stress disorder’

Singer was previously raped as a teenager

Lady Gaga has revealed that she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

The singer, who was raped at the age of 19, said her own life struggles have helped her to empathise with others who have suffered similar trauma.

‘I have a mental illness and I struggle with that mental illness every day. My own trauma in my own life has helped me to understand the trauma of others. I suffer from PTSD. I’ve never told anyone that before, so here we are,” she told the Today show in a clip you can watch below.

But Gaga said she was fortunate to have a strong support network around her, explaining that their kindness has helped to ”heal” her psychological wounds.

She added: ”The kindness that’s been shown to me, by doctors as well as my family and my friends, it’s really saved my life … I’ve been searching for ways to heal myself, and I’ve found that kindness is the best way.”

After the show, Gaga took to her Twitter account and captioned it: ”Today I shared one my deepest secrets w/ the world. Secrets keep you sick w/ shame.”

The singer recently took to the roof of London’s Westfield shopping centre to perform an intimate gig for a 100 lucky fans.

To kick off the festive season, Gaga performed a stripped-back, acoustic show on piano and guitar from inside Westfield’s ‘Snow Globe’.

With just a piano and guitar, she performed in front of London’s lit-up night skyline for a selection of competition winners, performing ‘Bad Romance’, Joanne’ and new single ‘Million Reasons’.

“I love my London and UK fans so much, and performing my new music for them in such an intimate and spectacular location was the perfect way to celebrate the holidays,” she said.
