Lady Gaga and other celebrities including singer Ricky Martin have begun celebrating the legalisation of gay marriage in New York.

The bill, legally recognising the union of same-sex couples, was signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo on Friday (June 24).

Gaga took to her Twitter page following the news, first tweeting, “I can't stop crying. We did it kids”, before going on to add: “The revolution is ours to fight for love, justice+equality. Rejoice NY, and propose. We did it!!!”

She also posted a picture on Twitter showing her celebrating. You can see the picture by clicking here.

Speaking of the historic bill Governor Cuomo said: "This state, when it's at its finest, is a beacon for social justice. We reached a new level of social justice this evening."

New York is the seventh state to recognise gay marriage after Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Washington DC and Iowa.
