It has been estimated that the cancellation of Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way Ball' tour will set the singer back £16m.

Gaga was this week forced to cancel all of the remaining dates on her current US and Canada tour as she undergoes surgery for an injury to her hip. The Born This Way Ball tour was promoted by Live Nation Global Touring, who now have to face the logistics of compensating the venues where the 22 affected shows were due to take place. Billboard estimates around 200,000 tickets would have been sold, around £16m in gross ticket sales.

On January 17, when Gaga last performed live, her world tour had made a reported $108.2 million after shifting 1.6 million tickets across 85 dates. Having completed the Asian, European, and South American legs in 2012 Gaga only had the North American leg to go. These dates would have seen the tour gross £128m, placing the tour in the top 20 tours of all time.

Speaking about the cancellation to Billboard, Arthur Fogel of Live Nation said the situation is a product of when, "the entertainment business intersects with the realities of life, and the glamorous perception of what touring is like is replaced by the reality that it’s tough. It’s tough for anybody, but the more physical performer, and she certainly is one, it’s that much tougher. I feel terrible for her; it’s a difficult situation. But it’s just one of those things that can’t be controlled, and we just deal with what we have to deal with."

A message posted on Gaga's official website on February 13 informed fans that she would require surgery for a labral tear of the right hip and will no longer be able to perform live until she has recovered.

The statement read: "Live Nation Global Touring has confirmed that the remainder of the Lady Gaga Born This Way Ball performances have been cancelled. After additional tests this morning to review the severity of the issue, it has been determined that Lady Gaga has a labral tear of the right hip. She will need surgery to repair the problem, followed by strict down time to recover. This unfortunately, will force her to cancel the tour, so she can heal."

Talking about her tour sustained injuries earlier in the week, Gaga said: "I am completely devastated and heartsick. I've been hiding this injury and pain from my staff for a month, praying it would heal, but after last night's performance I could not work. To the fans in Chicago, Detroit and Hamilton, I hope you can forgive me as it is nearly impossible for me to forgive myself right now. I would do anything for you. I will hopefully heal soon as possible and be at 500 per cent again, which is what you deserve."

Lady Gaga is expected to release her third album, 'ARTPOP', later this year.
