The singer was on hand at the event at Pier 26, during which she sang a version of 'The Star Spangled Banner', to celebrate the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (Doma), which banned same-sex marriage.

According to Billboard, she told the crowd: "We are not a niche. We are part, a big giant part of humanity. It's time for us to be mainstream. My LGBT friends and fans always said to me, 'I knew Lady Gaga when...' well, look who the star is now.

"Now I get to say that I knew 'you' when. Now I get to say I knew you when you suffered, when you felt unequal, when you felt there was nothing to look forward to. I knew you then and I knew you when, but I really know you know."

The performance was Gaga's first official appearance since she suffered a hip injury earlier this year. She was subsequently forced to undergo surgery and scrap the remaining dates on her 'Born This Way Ball' world tour, with reports claiming she could have lost an estimated £16m for cancelling the shows.

Gaga, who recently topped Forbes' 2013 list of Most Powerful Musicians, is expected to release her new album 'ARTPOP' later this year.
