Following Lady Gaga's recent SXSW performance, where she was spit-roasted and vomited on by a performance artist in front of the Texas audience, the singer's collaborator has responded to criticism denying that the event was a publicity stunt.

London artist Millie Brown was the artist who vomited paint over the 'Artpop' star, covering Gaga in luminous green liquid during 'Swine' before mounting a bucking bronco in the shape of a pig alongside Gaga and simulating sex with the singer until the song's completion.

Following the event, however, the pair were criticised for glamorising bulimia by US singer Demi Lovato, who took to Twitter to hit out against the performance. The singer wrote, "Sad… as if we don't have enough people glamorising eating disorders already. Putting the word ART in it isn't a free card to do whatever you want without consequences."

Yet Brown has now responded to the criticism, saying that the performance was nothing to do with eating disorders. "There's a clear difference between using my body to create something beautiful, to express myself and feel powerful, rather than using it to punish myself and conform to society's standards," said Brown in a statement issued to TMZ.

SXSW continues today, after an eventful week of performances throughout Austin, Texas that have seen sets from the likes of Coldplay, Julian Casablancas and a host of emerging artists.

Tyler, the Creator was also arrested at the festival yesterday (March 15) for allegedly starting a riot. The Odd Future member was picked up by police at Austin-Bergstrom Airport earlier today (March 15) because of an incident which took place earlier this week on March 13 in downtown Austin, where he apparently told fans at the Scoot Inn venue to push their way past the venue's staff, even though the space was already at capacity. He was arrested without incident on a misdemeanor riot charge, with his bond set at $3,500.
