Laura Marling has spoken out against TV programmes like The Voice and The X Factor.

When asked what she thought about television talent competitions by BBC Radio 4's Today programme this morning (April 24), she replied: "They are just horrible. It’s an awful part of our society. It’s teaching the wrong thing, I think, teaching that you want fame. It’s not fame that you want its satisfaction, which is a very different thing, but they sometimes go hand in hand. It makes me sad."

Marling was speaking about her latest project composing music for a new production of Shakespeare's As You Like It, which opens at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon tonight. "I have no knowledge of theatre, and I’d say not a huge knowledge of Shakespeare either. I didn’t finish school so I have always been daunted by the idea of Shakespeare. I got the real fear about doing this," she said.

"I was intrigued - you know, the wonderful thing was I was basically given a license to rip off Shakespeare," she added. When asked what the biggest challenge was with the project, she replied: "Because it’s a comedy, I’m not really known for my lightheartedness. My natural inclination is more melancholic and quite…not morose, that’s too much, but I had to find a balance."

Laura Marling will release her new album 'Once I Was An Eagle' on May 27. The follow-up to 2011's 'A Creature I Don't Know', it was at the Three Crows Studio owned by producer and solo musician Ethan Johns (Kings of Leon, Ryan Adams, Vaccines), with Dom Monks on engineering duties.
