Led Zeppelin 'will tour and record album with new singer'

Jimmy Page's manager confirms that the band are keen to get things rolling

Jimmy Page's manager today confirmed that Led Zeppelin are planning to tour and record a new album with a replacement singer for Robert Plant.

Plant confirmed in December that he wasn't interested in a full Led Zeppelin reunion, despite still remaining on good terms with his former bandmates.

In October, Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones hinted that the band were willing to continue with or without Plant.

Speaking about Led Zeppelin's future plans, Page's manager Peter Mensch confirmed that the band would indeed carry on - if they can find the right singer.

"Jimmy Page has been playing guitar professionally since he was 16 years old. Jimmy Page likes being a musician. That's what he does! He doesn't want to be a race car driver or a solicitor," Mensch told 6Music.

"So they [Page, Jones and drummer Jason Bonham] did the show [at London's O2 Arena in 2007] with Robert Plant; they had a really good time rehearsing, the three of them, before Robert showed up.

"And they decided that if they could find a singer that they thought would fit their bill – whatever their bill was at this stage in their career – that they'd make a record and go on tour.

Mensch said that he supported the trio's decision to carry on playing together, although he refused to comment on who Plant's replacement might be.

"John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page enjoy playing with each other, Jason Bonham is a really good drummer so why not? We just need to find a singer," he said.

While rumours of who Plant's replacement will be have included Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, Mensch remained tight-lipped on the issue.

"It's gonna be a long and difficult process," he said. "And we're not soliciting people! So don't call me about it!"

This is going to be the worst idea ever. It will be like Queen with Paul Rogers.Don't call it Zepplin unless Plant is involved.

I'm all for this actually but they shouldn't call themselves Led Zeppelin because without Plant they just aren't. It's the equivelent of New Order calling themselves Joy Division.

For fucks sake, why can't they just leave it alone? Led Zeppelin was the world's greatest band in the 70s, but all that has passed now and they won't ever be able to recapture it. If Page still wants to perform music, that's fair enough. Go on tour, record an album - just don't do it under the Led Zeppelin name. Preserve the legacy of the band, and move on....

My massive-error sense is tingling. The thing that made Led Zeppelin's reunion special was that the three remaining of the originals were performing, with a Bonham to keep it in the family. If Led Zeppelin return under the name 'Led Zeppelin' without the mighty Plant, I fear it could undermine the legend... It'd basically be like McCartney and Starr working together as 'The Beatles'. Just a stain.

I couldn't really care either way if they get back together but any band member can, at a push, be peplaced but not the front man. Maybe their hoping on a younger audience this time around and get away with it.

Very stupid idea. Great band but all of these reunions (Cream, The Sex Pistols, Genesis, The Police....) are just a load of rubbish. I mean come on, it's all about the dollar these days. Frankly, I think it's pathetic that all of these old men can't let it go.

oooh no. they've been one of the best bands in the world, played a brilliant reunion gig - can't they just leave it at that before going downhill!?

There is no Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant it is just plain silly, why would anyone want to start a cover band, they should go out and tour but not call it anything else or than what it is not Led Zeppelin.

No, no, no! I was denying the rumour for so long, and they just throw it back in my face. It honestly can't b ehappening. I'm 14, I can't imagine a much younger audience they're trying to appeal to, this is all wrong. Every fan should see that.

This is an awful idea, although my cynical side is telling me it's all leading up to Plant saying "Go on then I'll do it", at the 11th hour. As much as I want them to do the reunion tour I can't help but admire his stubborness (like Ian Brown's). But come on fellas it's simple: No Plant = No album / tour.

...Good for Mr. Plant ...he's the only sane one in the bunch ...but it's their legacy to ruin if they want...i guess.

This may be an unpopular opinion judging by previous comments, but I love Led Zeppelin and if they got Chris Cornell on board I would be there in a second! He might not be Robert Plant but he has an awesome voice, is a good frontman and I would pay in excess of £100 for a ticket to that gig!

whoa whoa whoa. Mr. PLant just won best vocals in rock award and the lead singer of cream called him out on loosing his range and now he drops out of the band.. Someone give robert a helium balloon on stage so he can hit those old notes again. I want A Pen Cap Chew or Fecal Matter reunion.

Why don't they just have a tv show on ,say a saturday night to audition new singers? the public can then decide who they want to see sing in the 'zep. ZEP factor.....

ed2005

This is a seriously bad move. Plant is stilll recording music, and trying to do new stuff, why are Plant and Jones so stuck in the past?! At the very least: don't do it as Led Zeppelin!

i'd be for it. but they shouldnt call themselves led zeppelin. itll be like audioslave calling themselves rage against the machine, or as elspud nicely said, New Order calling themselves Joy Division

courtz005

Jan 8, 2009

I'm sorry but doing this ruins the whole point of the ONE OFF gig they did. They really shouldn't destroy their past.

Hi there, there is only guy in this world that can pull this off. He is the bastard son of Robert Plant. An amazing artist!! Conceived when Zep were touring down under. He even looks like the young Plant and sing like him when he was young. he has been waiting in the wings all of his life. He is from Downunder. Go and find him before its too late. You need to go on the same journey the famous explorer from England made in the late 1700's. Zeppelin has always been about the angel and the devil. All the rumoured singers so far not one of them is an angel, like his dad Robert Plant.

Haha I'd liketo hear everyone's suggestion for the worst possible replacement Zep could use. I'd go with Ricky Wilson.

Jimmy Page has already said it won't be called Led Zeppelin. Mensch doesn't say it'll be called Led Zep, just that the others are gonna carry on without Plant. Good luck to 'em, gotta be better than that Plant/Kraus nonsense.

Please mr. Page or mr. Plant if you happen to read this PLEASE stay together, do not tour or record anything without robert!!! Robert, this is your band too, remember, you're a golden god!!! Please. If it's led zepp with only 2 of it's original members playing, it's not led Zeppelin! Please, do my generation a favor ((I am only 14)) and tour with plant!
