Linkin Park have expressed their sadness at the death of a fan following their show in South Africa last night (November 7).

One woman was killed after an advertising hoarding outside the arena fell onto fans outside the band's gig at Green Point stadium in Cape Town. As many as 12 fans were hospitalised after the incident, with 20 more injured, the BBC reports.

The band went on to perform as scheduled later in the evening, after police deemed the site clear after removing all of the advertising from the site.

Posting on their Facebook page after the show, the band wrote: "Following our performance tonight at Cape Town Stadium, we were advised that several people were injured as a result of the collapse of an advertising tower erected by Lucozade in the parking area outside the venue. We wish to express our deep sadness and concern for those injured and our heartfelt condolences to the family of the fan who died as a result of her injuries."

The statement added: "Though we have had no relationship with the sponsor or the entity responsible for erecting the structure, we take the safety of our fans very seriously and our thoughts are with all of those who were affected by this tragedy."

Lucozade's parent company GlaxoSmithKline, who sponsored the shows, tweeted a statement in response to the incident: "GSK & Lucozade express their shock and extreme sadness about the accident last night. Our immediate concern is for victims & their families and our thoughts and prayers are with them."

A spokesperson for the city said the hoarding had been certified as safe by structural engineers prior to Linkin Park's performance.
