Linkin Park have confirmed that their new album will be released during 2016.

Earlier this month, the band posted a picture of frontman Chester Bennington in the studio on their Instagram page with the message: "back to work this week."

Now rapper Mike Shinoda has told fans in a webchat: "It's going well. It's gonna be [released] later… It's probably, like, second half of this year, I think."

He continued: "We've started on it. We've got some songs [in the works]. They're mostly just like words and melodies at this point... I think everybody is pretty happy with where things are at. [Guitarist] Brad [Delson] and [singer] Chester [Bennington] have been coming in with me a lot and... I feel like it's really a good start."

"We don't have any names for the songs or anything like that... it's mostly just vocals and piano and guitar — like, acoustic guitar — and some samples and stuff at this point. And even as stripped down as that is, I think we're all really happy and we're really excited about where things are going."

The band released their last album 'The Hunting Party' in 2014.

Meanwhile, Shinoda recounted the oral history of the band's 2000 debut album 'Hybrid Theory' last year.

Their debut album reached Number Four in the UK charts and has since sold over 1,500,000 copies in the UK and 10,222,000 copies in the US.

Shinoda described the band as just "kids" writing music in their parents' houses before the album's recording and release.
