But the Rio show is in jeopardy again

Live Earth has kicked off in Sydney, Australia – the first of a nine concerts that are scheduled take place worldwide on July 7.

An aboriginal group launched the event with a song and dance performance, setting the stage for the Australian leg at Aussie Stadium in Moore Park, Sydney.

A video greeting from Al Gore followed, after which Wolfmother took the stages.

Acts including , Jack Johnson and Crowded House will all play later. Hollywood actress Toni Collette is also on the bill with her band Toni Collette and The Finish.

Meanwhile, the Rio De Janeiro show is once again in doubt after prosecutor Denise Tarin appealed a judges decision to allow the show to go ahead, despite security concerns. Tarin is arguing that Rio police do not have the resources to monitor the 700,000 people expected at Copacabana Beach.

The series of events is part of a campaign by environmentalist and former US Vice President Al Gore to bring awareness to climate change.
