Lorde performs US Number One hit 'Royals' on morning TV - watch

16-year-old from New Zealand is youngest singer to top the Billboard Hot 100 since Tiffany

Lorde performed her US Number One single 'Royals' on daytime TV show Good Morning America yesterday (October 4). Watch her performance above.

The track had been at Number Three in the Billboard Hot 100 for several weeks, but replaced Miley Cyrus' 'Wrecking Ball' at the top spot earlier this week. Aged 16 years and 11 months, Lorde, who turns 17 on November 7, is the youngest solo artist to top the US charts since Tiffany, who took the top spot with 'I Think We're Alone Now' in 1987.

The singer-songwriter from New Zealand - real name Ella Yelich-O'Connor - told Billboard afterwards: "It feels like a combination of my birthday, Christmas and washing my hair after a month of not doing so. [I'm] very, very grateful for everyone's love and kind words."

'Royals' has been a slow burning success, selling 294,000 downloads in America last week, but close to 1.9 million copies in total, reports Herald Sun. Lorde's 'The Love Club' EP stayed in the Top Five of the charts in her native New Zealand for five months.

Lorde will release 'Royals' in the UK on October 20 followed by her debut full-length LP, 'Pure Heroine', on October 28. Speaking previously to NME about her desire to retain control over her music, she said: "Everything that's put out with my name on it should be representative of me and what i want to do as an artist, as opposed to what some dudes in a room think is going to make a lot of money."
