Lorde's 'Royals' has rocketed to the top on the British iTunes chart within hours of its release.

'Royals', already a Number One hit in the US and Lorde's homeland New Zealand, finally became available to download in the UK at midnight today (October 20) and at the time of writing, 12.30pm, is already Number One on the iTunes Top Singles Chart. X Factor singer James Arthur is second on the chart with 'You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You', followed by OneRepublic's 'Counting Stars', Miley Cyrus' 'Wrecking Ball' and Katy Perry's 'Roar'.

Earlier this month 16-year-old Lorde said the lyrical content of 'Royals', which criticises the lavish lifestyle pop stars sing about in their songs, is not profound, adding that she is surprised that nobody else wrote anything similar before she got the chance to do so.

The success of 'Royals' has seen Lorde – real name Ella Yelich-O'Connor – attract the attention of pop hitmaker Dr Luke (Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Jessie J) and she has recently revealed she is keen to start writing songs for other artists, including Rihanna.

Lorde's debut LP 'Pure Heroine' is set for release in the UK on October 28. Speaking previously to NME about her desire to retain control over her music, she said: "Everything that's put out with my name on it should be representative of me and what I want to do as an artist, as opposed to what some dudes in a room think is going to make a lot of money."

The 'Pure Heroine' tracklisting is as follows:

'Tennis Court'
'400 Lux'
'Royals'
'Ribs'
'Buzzcut Season'
'Team'
'Glory And Gore'
'Still Sane'
'White Teeth Teens'
'A World Alone'
