NEW ORLEANS airport is to be renamed in honour of jazz legend LOUIS ARMSTRONG, whose birth 100 years ago is being celebrated in the city next month.

The airport will be renamed at a ceremony on August 2, after a proposal by the city's mayor Marc Morial was given the green light.

It will be part of a week of celebrations to honour the singer, who was born on August 4.

Events include a conference held at the city's university, a tribute concert billed 'Satchmo To Marsalis: A Tribute to the Father Of Jazz' featuring Wynton Marsalis and Harry Connick Jr, and 'Satchmo's Summerfest', a three-day bash with local music and food in New Orleans' French Quarter.

Armstrong died in 1971.
