New track about mystic upsets religious community
Madonna is in trouble with a group of rabbis after writing a song about one of their number.
The star’s forthcoming album ‘Confessions On A Dancefloor’ is set to feature a track called ‘Isaac’ about a 16th century Kabbalist mystic called Yitzhak Luria.
However the rabbis who oversee his tomb in Israel have stated that it is forbidden to use Luria’s name for profit and Madonna faces “punishment”, BBC News reports.
"Jewish law forbids the use of the name of the holy rabbi for profit," explained Rabbi Rafael Cohen who runs a seminary named after Luria in the Israeli town Safed. "Her act is just simply unacceptable and I can only sympathise for her because of the punishment that she is going to receive from the heavens."
Another rabbi, Israel Deri, who is deputy chairman of the Religious Sites Authority which is in charge of Luria's burial site, added his condemnation of the singer stating: "Such a woman brings great sin on Kabbalah."
Madonna has so far not commented on the song or the rabbis' reaction.
