Madonna offered to ‘support’ baby not adopt Madonna Tickets
Singer break silence over African child
Madonna has revealed that she offered to support the baby she eventually adopted and leave him in Malawi, but the child’s father declined.
The singer also denied that baby David Banda had regular visits from his family at his orphanage.
Asked if it would have been option to support the baby and leave him in Malawi, Madonna explained she had considered doing that.
“Yes, I offered that option to the father and he declined," she said. “And I never met a granny and I was told… from the day that he was left in the orphanage he was not visited by any extended family members and that’s really why I became interested in him.
“If someone had said to me, ‘His dad comes every week or his granny visits on a regular basis and he’s well looked after,’ I would not even have given it another thought.”
Madonna added that there were “many conditions” that made her “worry for his life”.
“One was the fact that, according to the reverend who ran the orphanage that David came from, his father never visited him," she told the BBC's Newsnight in an interview to be broadcast on November 1. “His father lived 50 or 60km away, had not car, had no money and, as far as I was told, had remarried and moved on with him life.”
