Madonna: Adopted Malawi baby would have died without me

Singer claims David Banda would be dead if she hadn't intervened

Madonna has claimed that David Banda, the Malawian infant she is currently in the process of adopting, would have died if she hadn't intervened.

Speaking to Interview the singer, who has been heavily criticised for the adoption and accused of using her celebrity status to fast-track adoption, claimed there was zero chance the child would be alive now if it was not for her.

"I promise you, he wouldn't have lived if I hadn't taken him," she said. "It's not even a possibility. Visiting Africa made me see how tough and resilient kids are and how little credit we give them for that."

Madonna and her husband, Guy Ritchie, are expected to be granted full adoption rights of [b]Banda[b] at a forthcoming court hearing.
